Why Weight Loss Feels Impossible (And How to Rebuild Self-Belief)

Struggling to lose weight even though you’ve tried everything? It could be that you’ve stopped believing it’s possible.

This video in my Science of Sustainable Weight Loss series explores the psychology of belief, why your brain learns to doubt you after years of dieting, and how rebuilding self-belief can change the way you approach weight loss for good.

Summary

If you’ve lost weight before and then regained it, your brain doesn’t forget. It stores those experiences as evidence and quietly builds a story that nothing will work. When your brain starts to believe that story, it behaves as though it is true and begins to protect you from disappointment through actions such as self-sabotage.

You can start strengthening your belief today with small, practical steps:

Set achievable goals: Give your brain realistic evidence that success is possible.
Allow possibility: Even thinking, “this might work for me”, can begin to shift your mindset.
Notice small wins: Changes in behaviour, thinking and self-talk all count and help build momentum.
